Southern Style Biscuits & Sausage Gravy {Gluten Free and Vegan}


Vegan gluten free biscuits... and sausage gravy!

I have already introduced you to those pretty biscuits. I absolutely love that recipe. When done correctly, they come out just lovely.

Recently, the inclination for making those biscuits reemerged after all of that dessert baking last month. (we are experimenting some more by the way for the biscuits as photographed above---coming soon!).

My husband and I wanted to make a Southern style biscuit with vegan sausage gravy {His Southern roots and all - you can't go without sausage in the gravy!}

And that is where Sol Cuisine came in handy with there absolutely delicious breakfast patties. I'll tell you a short story  to lay the foundation (which is hard for me!)

My husband and I first learned about Sol Cuisine after we had just gone totally gluten free in 2011 and discovering that we had to say "fair well" to Morning Star Farms and Boca Burger. We were devastated not only because of the veggie burgers we were loosing, but because we were also saying good-bye to those maple flavored breakfast patties...who doesn't didn't love the maple flavored breakfast patties?

So...

We were in Michigan in 2011 - still lamenting over having to go gluten free - and we happened to be in a store called Apple Valley which is an all vegetarian grocery store. It is a lovely little community store nestled in a small college town.

That day in Michigan at Apple Valley, my husband did his famous touring of the freezer section (we were desperate for gluten free anything then), and boom! "Are these 100% gluten free? They are! They are!", I heard.

My husband had found the Canadian Sol Cuisine Original burgers. We couldn't believe we found a burger that resembled our Morning Star ones - but they looked bigger and juicer and were gluten free!

So fast forward a bit, on the 4th of July there in Michigan with our friends (we were there for the summer), we did some cooking out. They (being vegetarian but not gluten free) made Morning Star Farms griller patties, and we had our new gluten free Sol Cuisine veggie patties....

They had their whole wheat buns. We had our gluten free buns.

And as we were all enjoying the festivities of American independence, our friends look over and said almost unanimously, "We should have had that type of burger, what is that? It smells so good, and looks much more like the real thing then our burgers". 

We smiled and replied, "These are Sol Cuisine - the best veggie burger that we have ever had". 

And for sure was I right. 

What's better? They are non-GMO, and they only have ingredients that you can identify (takes the guess-work out).

So for this recipe, I present to you Sol Cuisine breakfast patties.

Ingredients:

1 Gluten Free Vegan Biscuit recipe (I already have one)
Southern Style Sausage Gravy

For Southern Style Sausage Gravy...
1/8 cup brown rice flour
1/8 cup organic corn starch
2 1/2 to 3 cups of original soy or potato milk
3 tbsp vegan butter
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp Mrs. Dash Table Blend
Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions:

While your biscuits are baking...

Mince into crumbles, Sol Cuisine Breakfast Patties, and place them in the pan. Fry them gently in 1/2 tbsp butter. Once they are browned, remove them from the pan and set to the side. Keep the pan, for use again...

Second, in a small mixing bowl, mix together the brown rice flour and corn starch. Mix in the seasonings as well (minus the salt and pepper).

Once all of the seasonings and flours are well mixed, add a cup of milk, and stir. Make sure to remove all lumps from the flour/corn starch mixture by stirring thoroughly. 

Heat the pan back up again, on medium heat.

Once the pan is heated, add the last 1 1/2 to 2 cups (depending on the thickness you prefer) of dairy free milk to the pan, along with the remaining 2 tbsp of vegan butter, and the sausage patty crumbles. Stir well.

Now add the flour/cornstarch mixture to the heated pan of milk, butter, and sausage patty crumbles, and stir gently until mixture heats and thickens.

While stirring, add salt and pepper to taste.

Serve sausage gravy over warm biscuits.

I realize this was posted awhile ago but FYI Sol Cuisine is NOT 100% Gluten Free. They process their products on the same machinery as gluten containing products. If you are celiac (like I am) these are not something you can eat! I couldn't figure out why I was still getting sick after cutting out all the gluten. Thankfully one day I just happened to turn the box over and read the fine print! It's VERY disappointing because these are delicious and it's SO hard to find vegan gluten free items. I mean honestly, shame on Sol why go to all that trouble and then just knock out half of your consumer base by processing on contaminated machinery?! LOL sorry for the little rant, but thought it was an important distinction that was missing from the article.
